The Synopsis of the book: “It is an exclusive inside look into the unconventional mind of one of Africa’s most beloved celebrities. Using his wit and candor, Jim shares his unique perspectives on some of the paramount issues in today’s world. With his life and experiences as the backdrop, he points the searchlight on our traditions, patterns, and constraints.
Notoriously elusive and protective of his private life, he takes a big step into the spotlight as he gives us an all-access pass to the momentous experiences of his life from childhood to date. In typical Jim Iyke fashion, The Gift in the Odds is bold, audacious, and unafraid to touch subjects usually considered too sensitive or taboo in traditional African societies.
Most people know Jim as a Nollywood bad-boy actor, but very few are aware of the events that shaped him. The only son in a family of girls and growing up in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Abuja, his dad resorted to unconventional solutions for keeping him safe and out of neighborhood gangs. This unique approach served to awaken and mold abilities that would form the backbone of his celebrated acting career.
As he grew up, Jim found out the hard way that the world is filled with people who will always try to take advantage of those who are weaker. So, he learned to stand up for himself, fight for those who are weak, and hone the power of his mind until it became a weapon. He became the dragon, always ready to spit fire and lash out when provoked.
Surmounting the odds, Jim became one of the most successful and highest-paid actors in Africa. But on the heels of fame, came controversy. His penchant for combative and roisterous behavior soon mirrored the villains, rogues, and ‘bad-boy’ roles he played in movies. And so, the moniker “The Bad Boy of Nollywood” was born.
The Gift in the Odds: Walking Through Walls is the first book in the series and traces Jim’s metamorphosis from a pre-teen misfit to a hell-raising firebrand with a taste for outrageous and scandalous behavior and finally to a philosophical, visionary entrepreneur with the world at his feet. It is a story of grit, determination, and tenacity that shows and how one man’s resolve to take charge of his life and reinvent his story turned him into one of Africa’s most remarkable success stories.
