Anthony Martial reported for Manchester United training on Sunday afternoon after denying Ralf Rangnick’s claim that he refused to play against Aston Villa.

The Old Trafford interim boss said the Frenchman didn’t make himself available for the 2-2 draw at Villa Park, leaving United short on the bench with eight substitutes.

He said in his post-match press conference: “Yes, he didn’t want to be in the squad. He would have been in the squad normally but he didn’t want to and that was the reason why he didn’t travel with us yesterday.”

But Martial hit back at the German , insisting that those claims were far from the truth.

The forward said on Instagram : “I will never refuse to play a match for Man United.

“I’ve been here for 7 years and I never disrespected and never will disrespect the club and the fans.”

It was business as usual on Sunday, however, as Martial turned up to training at Carrington as he was spotted leaving around 2 .30pm. He stopped his car to take photos with fans waiting outside the complex’s gates.

Martial has expressed his desire to leave United in January with the Red Devils willing to grant his wish, but no move has materialised yet.

Any loan deal would have to cover all of his wages and include a loan fee as Sevilla has a short-term offer rejected after failing to meet those terms.

Martial’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, recently confirmed that his client wanted to leave Old Trafford in the current window.

He said: “Anthony wishes to leave the club in January. He just needs to play. He doesn’t want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon.”

Rangnick was quizzed on the situation following United’s narrow win at Norwich City last month.

“I don’t communicate with agents via the media or the press,” the Red Devils boss firmly stated. “The player hasn’t spoken with me or with us about it… To be honest, what his agent has said in the media is not that much of interest.”

Then asked whether he would speak to the forward about Lamboley’s admission, Rangnick added: “No, because then I’d react to what the agent has said.

“It should be the player. If a player wishes to go to another club, it should be the player who informs either the board or myself, whoever.

“I have never spoken to a player via media or agents.”

Steven Gerrard’s men claimed a point against United despite the visitors taking a commanding two-goal lead thanks to a brace from Bruno Fernandes as super sub Philippe Coutinho rescued his new club on his debut.

Rangnick admitted the result was “difficult to accept” and was adamant his side’s performance warranted all three points.

“It is difficult to accept this result after being 2-0 up and in quite a few spells of the game, I think it was the best performance since I arrived,” the German said.

“In the first half an hour, we completely dominated and controlled the game on the ball. Defensively, we played compact and tight.

“But again, when you are 2-0 up and throw away two valuable points, it almost feels like a defeat, but we have to look ahead and take the best out of it. in spells, it was a very good performance today.”
