Sergio Ramos has taken a parting shot at Real Madrid as he claims he accepted a contract offer from the club, only for the La Liga giants to tell him it was no longer on the table.

The 35-year-old has left the Bernabeu after 16 years as he said his farewells at a press conference on Thursday. Negotiations were ongoing throughout last season as his contract was running down, but talks stalled as both parties were unable to come to an agreement.

The Spaniard held off on accepting a one-year extension as his preference was to secure a two-year deal. Ramos insists he did eventually accept the initial offer that was tabled by Madrid, but it was too late as it had been rescinded. And the centre-half has hit out at the club for not telling him there was an expiry date on the deal that was presented to him.

He said: “I never wanted to leave Real Madrid , always wanted to continue here. The club offered me one year, with a drop in salary. I wanted two years, for me and my family. Then I was told that the offer from the club was no longer there, time had run out, and I had not realised.

“I decided to accept the offer, I thought was still on the table, but they said it was by now too late. I was never told that there was an expiry date to the offer. I thought it was just part of the negotiation – as always has happened over 16 years. But then I was told time had run out. Some people thought Sergio Ramos and Real Madrid was a perfect marriage. But it was not to be, now is time to look for another team, play at my level, and add more trophies to my CV.

“I don’t know why this offer had an expiry date, without being told, while there was a negotiation. Maybe I misunderstood, but nobody had told me the offer could be withdrawn. These are private meetings, which I want to keep private, out of respect for my club and my president. Some things you should not reveal. But it was communicated to my agent, about a week ago, and we were surprised. I never received an ultimatum for yes or no.

“My relationship with the president has always been extraordinary, like father and son, in a sporting sense. All families have their ups and downs. I will remember it positively, for all I lived here in 16 years. I am never moved by money. It was about years – I wanted two, just to be relaxed, for my family. I felt I had earned it. But it was not to be. A new stage will begin now.”

Ramos is now on the lookout for a new club and is expected to have a handful of suitors including Manchester United .

The defender has been linked with a return to former club Sevilla, but he doesn’t feel it’s a viable option. He was also quizzed about a shock move to Barcelona , but the Spain international says a switch to Madrid’s rivals is “impossible.” He added: “We never thought in any moment about any other team. Since January I’ve been on market, so there have been some calls, interested clubs. But we never had in mind leaving Real Madrid. From now, we will look for a good option.

“Sevilla is the other club of my heart, had marvellous time there. But today I am not thinking about that option. Barca would be a resounding no, impossible to see Ramos in a Barca shirt. These have been difficult months, not easy at all. I am fully happy when I’m on the pitch. But now I can say I am recovered, really looking forward to competing again. There are no hard feelings, no problems. This will always be my home, always be in my heart.”
