“I Am Leaving NFF After My Tenure Elapses” – Amaju Pinnick Discloses

The President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Delta State-born Amaju Pinnick has revealed that despite he is still eligible to run for the position of the president of the NFF, he won’t be running for the office again come time for the election later this year. Amaju Pinnick

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) elections are to be held in the last quarter of 2022.

Amaju Pinnick made the revelation during a phone call interview with veteran journalist Godwin Enakhena on his sports show, Top Sport, where Amaju gave his reason for wanting to walk away from the NFF even though he was still eligible to run for a 3rd time on a 4-year tenure. He said his family is the influencing factor for his decision to withdraw from the NFF presidential contest. Even though he went on to brag that to date he is the first NFF president to have been re-elected after a successful first term.

According to him, his family alleged that his tenure as president has taken its toll on the time he spends with them.

“Am I eligible to run? Yes! I am eligible to run based on our [NFF] status. Do I want to run at this moment? It’s a no-no because my family says so at the moment.”

“My family is very key to me, family first.

“They say that I’ve put in my all and put in my best. They say that it’s taken a toll on me and taken a toll on the family. They believe that it’s time that I move on”, Pinnick added calling the decision, ‘very regrettable’.

NFF President, PinnickThe 51-year-old administrator became president of the NFF after he was first elected in September 2014. He was then re-elected in September 2018, for the second term of four years.

His eight-year reign has asides from embezzlement allegations, fund misappropriations and court battles, been majorly littered with the failure of Nigerian national teams to qualify for continental and international competitions.

Under Pinnick, the male and female national teams failed to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after the U17 and U20 men’s teams could not qualify for their respective World championships.

Amaju PinnickSimilar cases played out with the Super Eagles who in 2015 and 2017, failed to qualify for back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations, leading to calls for the NFF president and his board to resign.

Recently, heat turned up on Amaju Pinnick and his board members, after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The highlights of Amaju Pinnick’s time as president came as the Super Falcons won the Women’s AFCON in 2016, and 2018, and the Flying Eagles won the 2015 FIFA World Cup. Pinnick’s time also saw the Men’s Olympic football team win bronze in Rio in 2016, and the Super Eagles finish as the third-placed team at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.
