Gunmen Attack Imo State Prison, Free Over 1500 Inmates

Some Gunmen in the earlier hours of Monday morning April 5th, allegedly attacked the Owerri Correctional Prison in Imo State capital, freeing over 1500 inmates according to reports. Imo State Prison Attacked

It is reported that the attackers torched the Imo State Police Command headquarters in the state capital razing almost all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters.

It is further gathered that the gunmen went on to free almost all of the suspects in all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

According to reports from our sources, the gunmen laid a siege on the correctional facilities starting around 1 am till 3 am Monday morning.

They sang solidarity songs at the Government House Roundabout for about 30 minutes before attacking the facilities, a security source explained.

On breaking into the prison facility with the aid of explosives and dynamite, the attackers told the inmates to go home.

When contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the attacks.

He, however, assured the people of the state that the security agencies were on top of the matter.
