Greenfield Students’ Death, Baba Ijesha’s Case, 93rd Oscars And Other Top Events Of The Weekend

1. As the past week was coming to a close, the hashtag #SecureIkoyi was one of the top trending thing in Nigeria as residents of the Lagos’ richest hub Banana Island and Parkview called on the Lagos State Government to save them from the many miscreants hovering over the gates of their estates. Their main demand was that the State kicks out certain members of the society from the area over claims that there is a growing menace of drugs, gambling, and other crimes in the highbrow area.
2. The weekend started off with some sad news as 3 of the students kidnapped from Greenfield University, Kaduna were found dead in a village close to the school campus. It was a hard one, most especially for their families, some of who found out about their death on social media. The Giant of Africa again lost 3 of its future to the cold hands of banditry and insecurity.
3. In light of this, the Presidency vowed to combat insecurity and banditry specifically with all of the resources it has available. President Buhari had described the shot-dead students as described the students as bright youngsters who were cut down by evil people in their prime. He also described the tenor of some political and religious leaders that seem to further incite and stoke the pain and anguish of mourning families who are forced to confront these atrocities as unfortunate.
4. Saturday ushered in further attacks as unknown gunmen unleashed their terror on the country home of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma. They invaded the Omuma house in Oru East Local Government Area of the state in the early hours of Saturday, killing two security men on duty before torching it. Another sect of bandits raided the new IGP’s hometown and went further to distribute admission pamphlets, asking residents to join them in the fight against anyone serving other gods except Allah.
5. Former gay and actor Uche Maduagwu over the weekend took his clout-chasing professional to Don Jazzy’s door step, slamming the music producer for talking about domestic violence in marriage. Asking him to first talk about why his failed marriage, Uche Maduagwu asked the Don to shut up.
6. In light of rise of banditry in Nigeria, the last edition of the KOKO Magazine focused on the hidden truth behind banditry in the nation and its effect. Highlighting the communities and States that have suffered attacks in the hands of bandits and insurgents, the magazine extensively analysed how banditry has affected education in North-west and Central.
7. Baba Ijesha’s pedophilic case is still making so much waves and actors in the Nigerian movie industry are beginning to have a clash on which side they belong and their reactions. While Tonto Dike promise to make him never see the light of the day and Omoborty said the actor disgraced the movie industry, Bimpe Akintunde appealed with the public not to cancel her colleague but hear his side of the story. This sparked something in Iyabo Ojo and made her send warning to her colleagues to stop defending pedophilia. Another Yoruba actor Lege Miami then pounced on Tonto Dikeh, declaring her mad, while Yomi Fabiyi referred back to how Nigerians cancelled Baba Suwe during his drugs/NDLEA issue.8. Royal monarch, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi has suffered another heartbreak as another of his queens reportedly packed out and exited their marriage, just a few months after Queen Anu dumped the monarch. Controversial Instagram blogger, Gistlover reported the exit saga on, promised as usual, to share details and vivid explanation about the circumstances that led to the queen ending their marriage.9. Isa Pantami is still a course of debate and discussion and over the weekend, Nigerians capitalised on the reactions of many more names and figures to the matter. While they dragged Joe Abah for saying Isa Pantami should have renounced his statements long ago, they brought up Kemi Adeosun’s case again. “You Can’t Make Kemi Adeosun Resign And Keep Isa Pantami, It Undermines Public Accountability, Moghalu lectured Buhari while Aisha Yesufu broke her yearly Ramadan tradition to slam the Presidency.
10. On Sunday night, the biggest award in Hollywood went down at the L.A.’s Union Station but more virtually. The 93rd Oscars 2021 Awards also called the Academy Awards, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has always been filled with glitz and glam and yesterday’s was no exception just that for the first time, ceremony was held virtually and in-person due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
