Former OAU Vice Chancellor Anthony Elujoba Granted Bail

An Osun State High Court has granted bail to an ex-Acting Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Anthony Elujoba presently standing trial for theft. Alongside the embattled former VC, a former bursar of the university, Mrs. Aderonke Akeredolu, was also granted bail in a ruling Friday.Delivering his ruling, Justice David Oladimeji granted bail on self-recognition to Elujoba while the bursar was granted bail in the sum of N50 million and two sureties.This sparked wild jubilation among the former VC’s supporters – mainly staff and students of the institution at the court premises – as chants of his name rent the air. Elujoba is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on seven counts of stealing among others to the tune of N1.4bn.His arrest and subsequent detention has been met with wild protests by the university community among whom he remains hugely popular.Elujoba is generally credited for restoring peace to OAU in his one-year tenure as VC by prompt payment of workers’ salaries and improving the welfare of students.Photo Credit: Getty
