Easily accessible and vital for skin health, carrots are filled with beta carotene – a pre-cursor for vitamin A, which normalises skin functions to correct any skin conditions. As well as snacking on fresh carrots, try juicing one with an apple and a sprig of mint for a refreshing replacement to a mid-morning latte.
This delicious fish is filled with omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for skin health. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to help reduce inflammation and the signs of ageing in the body and on the skin. Salmon is one of my favourite types of fish to enjoy for a quick and easy dinner. Simply drench a piece of fresh salmon in lemon juice, wrap it in silver foil and pop it in the oven for 20-30 minutes.
3. Avocado: Packed with essential fatty acids, vitamin E and antioxidants, avocados should be a staple in any diet aiming for great skin. The ‘good fats’ are great for the health and hydration of cell membranes. These membranes are the gate keeper of your skin cells – they let the good stuff in and keeping the toxins out. Try a whole avocado in a salad or with a can of lemon tuna for a quick office lunch.
Filled with antioxidants, cacao increases blood circulation around the body for up to 2 hours – this means an instant glow ladies! When blood circulates at an optimum level, all skin cells are being nourished and remaining vital. I enjoy my cacao as an ingredient in a raw treat, or in a cup with boiling water. Cacao makes for a lovely afternoon pick-me-up.
My sushi train staple entrée, soy beans or edemame contain the soy isoflavone known as aglycone. This is known to assist in fine lines and the firmness of the skin. Soy beans are also known to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer and diabetes.
6. Blueberries: These are my favourite snack for great skin. Filled with antioxidants, and essential vitamins and minerals, blueberries are essential in healing any radical damage our skin has suffered.
7. Pumpkins: The orange colour of pumpkin comes from carotenoids – wrinkle-fighting plant pigments that help neutralise free radicals in the skin. Pumpkin is also filled with vitamin A, C and E, making it a perfect vegetable to treat your skin. Enjoy it roasted, or make a raw pumpkin pie as a healthy dessert.
8. Pumpkin Seeds: Also known as pepitas, these are an almost undiscovered beauty hero food. Packed with vitamin E, zinc and magnesium, these tiny seeds keep your skin glowing. They promote a strong regeneration of skin cells and are filled with protein, making them a perfect mid-morning snack. They are a perfect addition to trail mix, or just as a snack in between meals and meetings. Photo Credit: Getty
