FMC Abuja Names New Administrative Block After Aisha Buhari

Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jabi, Abuja, on Friday, commissioned a new administrative block with 62 offices and other state-of-the-art facilities built in honour of First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari.

The hospital management had explained that the First Lady has been extremely supportive to them in different ways that had resulted in improved medical services to Nigerians, hence the decision to name the edifice after her.

Minister of State for Health, Joseph Ekumankama, who commissioned the project sited at the FMC Jabi complex, Abuja, appreciated the efforts and financial prudence of the FMC management which, he said, culminated in the successful completion of the project without much delay.

He, thus challenged the management and staff of the hospital to up their maintenance culture game so they can retain the aesthetic beauty and usefulness of the facilities long after now.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Sa’ad Ahmed, in his remarks, explained that the project was conceived and commenced in 2021 due to the urgent need to decongest the existing facilities in the hospital and make room for more clinical services in a better atmosphere and environment.

He said: “When I assumed duty as CMD in 2020, I was taken aback by the space constraints in this health care facility which, obviously, had no defined administrative offices. This was a huge challenge, but we had to start from somewhere and appreciable progress has been made over time.

“Presently there are other building projects ongoing in the FMC complex apart from equipment support, ophthalmic complex, clinical services block, counselling center and ward block extension which are all at advanced stages of completion.

“We have increased clientele through hardwork and dedication to duty of our staff as well as provision of necessary equipment. We recruited some best brains in this country who are providing service in this facility.

“Numerous complex medical and surgical interventions are being carried out in this facility, notably, laser surgeries, open heart surgeries, spine and orthopedic surgeries, complex neurosurgical interventions diagnostic endoscopy, laporoscopic surgeries, hi-tech ophthalmic services, composite laboratory and radiologic support, comprehensive medical, antenatal and pediatric services, intensive care services among others.”

He confirmed that the complex was built through the regular capital budgets, hence he appreciated the government for prioritizing healthcare in ensuring increased budgetary provision and seamless release of fund for capital projects.

Chairman of the Board of Management Dr. Alex Tosan Ideh, in his remarks, appreciated the support and cooperation from the management and staff of the hospital which, according to him, resulted in improved clinical services to patients.

He expressed optimism that the hospital will record more growths in terms of sophisticated clinical and other services that would further strengthen the trust and confidence of Nigerians in the hospital services.
