The Federal Inland Revenue Service FIRS has slammed the Nigerian Postal Services NIPOST for ill knowledge about the difference between the Satmp Duty and Postage Stamp fees.
This is coming after NIPOST tackled the service on exclusive Stamp Duty collection rights again publicly, as the two agencies have been at each other’s neck for about a year now.
While the FIRS said the Finance Act 2019 conferred on it the exclusive right to collect stamp duty on behalf of the Federal Government, NIPOST countered this by saying the Act contains some ‘contradictions’ which should be addressed by appropriate authorities.
Taking to the streets of Twitter, however, FIRS, in a statement signed by its Director Communication and Liaison, Abdullahi Ismaila Ahmad mocked the Chairperson of the NIPOST Board, Maimuna Abubakar, for not knowing the difference between the two duties, and warned members of the public to disregard her misinformation.
“We appreciate the general public for demonstrating deep knowledge of the difference between Stamp Duty and Postage Stamp. It is unfortunate that Mrs. Maimuna Abubakar, Chairperson of the NIPOST Board is yet to understand this“, the statement began. “We therefore call on right-thinking Nigerians to disregard that ill-advised tweet by Mrs. Maimuna Abubakar and allied misinformation being disseminated by NIPOST in relation to Stamp Duties collection, which by law is the responsibility of the FIRS“, the statement ended.
