Fire Engulfs Onitsha Main Market

A fire outbreak has been reported in the early hours of Tuesday at the Onitsha main market in Anambra State.

The Onitsha main market is reputed to be the biggest market in West Africa with a large population of traders, who are mainly into importation of goods and sell various products.

According to a source, Barth Ifediora, who raised the alarm, said the outbreak happened in the early hours of Tuesday, in a part of the market well known as ‘White House’.

According to him, White House is the office where the office management have their offices with an expansive two-storey building that has several offices, meeting halls in the first and second floor while the ground floor has shops.

A source said: “The area mostly affected by the fire is the block of shops under the white house, where expensive lace materials are sold.”

Martin Agbili, the fire service boss in Anambra State, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.

Traders have, however, mobilized to the market to fight the outbreak.
