The top football governing body, FIFA, has fined the Russian Football Union 30,000 Swiss francs for racial chants by Russian fans against French footballers.
The hateful words were directed at French players during a friendly match between France and Russia in St Petersburg earlier in the year.
A Reuters photographer confirmed the racial chants when he disclosed that he heard monkey chants directed at French players during the match, including when Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante came to the touchline for a throw-in.
FIFA disclosed that it conducted a “thorough investigation” of video evidence of the match before arriving at its decision. The Russian Football Union assured the football globe that it will clampdown on the action of racist groups before the highly anticipated world cup which will feature several African countries.
