FG Reduces Criminal Charges Against Ex-Central Bank Governor, Emefiele

Federal Government (FG) on Thursday reduced the criminal charges initiated against the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele from 20 to six.

This comes shortly as the Federal Capital Territory High Court permitted Emefiele to move outside the capital city, Abuja amid controversy surrounding his bail terms.

KOKO TV NG learned that the charges against Godwin Emefiele include criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud and conspiracy to commit felony.

This would also be the second time the Nigerian Government under President Bola Tinubu would change the criminal allegations against the former governor of the apex court.

In August 2023, KOKO TV NG reported how the government withdrew the “illegal possession of firearms” case filed against Emefiele at the Federal High Court in Lagos and filed fresh charges with 20 counts at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar told Justice Nicholas Oweibo that the application followed the result of further investigations.
