Nigerians react to President Emmanuel Macron’s historic visit to the Afrika Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Afrika Shrine first created by in 1970 by Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti is an entertainment centre in Lagos State and it also serves as the host location of the annual Felabration music festival.
Macron visited the shrine on Tuesday night to inaugurate the African Cultural season to be hosted in France in 2020. The 40-year-old French politician became the first President to enter the Shrine, over 15 years after Macron first visited the venue as Jean-Michel’s only son.
“The Shrine is an iconic cultural hub,” Macron admitted. “And I say with a lot of humility that I recognize the importance of African culture.” Macron’s visit has got Nigerians reacting, as they praised Fela’s legacy and the Afrika Shrine – that is currently managed by his children Femi Kuti and Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti.
Celebrities spotted at the ‘Celebration of African Culture’ headlined by Macron are Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, and African music big names including Angelique Kidjo, Youssou N’Dour, Asa, Banky W, and Yemi Alade.
