Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti Shut Down Indefinitely Over Death Of Two Students

The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti was on Sunday shut indefinitely following a violent protest by students over alleged deaths of two undergraduates in mysterious circumstances. Trouble began on the institution’s campus on Friday when two of the students reportedly complained of malaria fever. They were reportedly rushed to the school’s health centre, but their condition was said to have later aggravated, leading to their deaths on Saturday.

This news irked the students, who mobilised and marched to the health centre and burnt it down. Apart from destroying property on sight, the students blocked all roads leading to the institution and disallowed free movement of vehicles. A student, who asked not to be named, alleged that only analgesic drugs were available at the health centre.

But the Deputy Registrar, Information and Protocol of the institution, Mr. Adeyemi Adejolu, said one student died. He added that the student died at another hospital, and not at the polytechnic’s health centre. He said, “The school has been shut and a panel of inquiry constituted to probe the remote and immediate cause of the crisis.”
