The spat started just before half time inside the Milan penalty area as a war of words broke out. With fans not inside the stadium, much of their discussion could be heard.
The referee failed to gain control of the situation and things escalated quickly.
Lukaku and Ibrahimovic came face-to-face, with the latter appearing to throw his head towards the Inter forward. Both players were initially yellow-carded, but the row continued after the half-time whistle was blown.
Lukaku had to be held back from chasing after Ibrahimovic as the players, coaching staff and officials headed towards the tunnel.
Inter manager Antonio Conte grabbed hold of Lukaku to ensure he did not get to Ibrahimovic, who had clearly got under his rival’s skin.
Lukaku could be heard blasting: “He wants to talk about mothers? Son of a b****.” The ex-Everton star could also be heard adding: “F*** you and your wife, you b****.”
Earlier on when the row first began, Ibrahimovic had told Lukaku: “Go do your vodoo s***, you little donkey”.
In the second half, Ibrahimovic only lasted a little longer before seeing his game come to a premature end.
Lukaku appeared to get the last laugh as his rival saw red following a trip on Aleksandar Kolarov. Both strikers ended up on the scoresheet too as Lukaku’s penalty 20 minutes from time cancelled out Ibrahimovic’s opener.
And then Inter stole it in the dying moments as Christian Eriksen bagged a rare goal in stoppage time to send Conte’s men through to the semi-finals.
