The Merseyside club switched their focus to theNigeria international having been frustrated in their attempts to sign Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace.

Zaha handed in a formal transfer request on Wednesday evening but Palace held firm and refused to sell their prize-asset having reluctantly allowed Aaron Wan-Bissaka to join Manchester United earlier this summer. Iwobi, 23, is likely to offer the same versatility and unpredictability as Zaha but has never scored more than three goals in a single Premier League campaign.

Unai Emery reportedly wanted to keep the academy graduate who made his Premier League debut four years ago, but Arsenal’s need to balance the books saw Raul Sanllehi sanction the sale which could net the Gunners as much as £40million. Iwobi underwent a medical in London in an attempt to beat the 17.00 deadline.

Everton manager Marco Silva said: ‘Alex was one of our main targets for this window and I believe he is a fantastic signing for Everton. He is a direct and skilful winger and attacking midfielder who always works very hard for his team.

‘He is still young but already with a lot of top-level experience – 100 Premier League matches, more in Europe and many international games. It was important for me to have one more quality option for our attacking positions to add to what we have with Richarlison, Bernard and Theo Walcott.

‘Alex fits exactly the profile of player I want in my model. He is hungry to join Everton and take the next step in his career, to help us compete with the strongest teams in the league and reach his potential at our club.’
