EU Recommends Antiviral Drug Remdesivir For COVID-19 Treatment

The European Medicines Agency, under the European Union body has recommended the use of antiviral drug Remdesivir in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
This is coming a few weeks after a study carried out by the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) found out that Remdesivir can be very effective in speeding up recovery from the the dreaded COVID-19.EU Recommends Use Of Antiviral Drug Remdesivir To Treat COVID-19PUNCH reported that the United States had authorized the emergency use of Remdesivir in hospitals on May 1, followed by Japan, while Europe is considering following suit.
The European Medicines Agency’s recommendation which came today, however, still needs approval from the European Commission, which is due to make a decision in the coming week.

Remdesivir is the first medicine against COVID-19 to be recommended for authorisation in the EU. Taking into consideration the available data, the agency considered that the balance of benefits and risks had been shown to be positive in patients with pneumonia requiring supplemental oxygen; i.e., the patients with severe disease“, EU reportedly said.
