Ethiopia Appoints Sahle-Work Zewde As First Female President

Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde has been appointed as Ethiopia’s new President following the sudden resignation of former President Mulatu Teshome.

Ethiopia’s parliament took it upon themselves to give the job to Ms. Zewde Sahle-Work, an experienced diplomat who most recently held a position with the United Nations.

Her election to the ceremonial position happened a< week after Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, appointed a cabinet with half the posts taken up by women.

While giving her acceptance speech, Ms. Sahle talked about the importance of maintaining peace and vows to do all that it takes to maintain the peace after the unexpected resignation of her predecessor, Mulatu Teshome.
