The duo were remanded in prison custody for writing a petition against the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Awgu Police Division, CSP Benjamin Ugwui over alleged extortion.

KOKO TV NG earlier reported that Orji had fixed December 12, 2023, for the argument on the bail application of the duo which was filed by their counsel in early November 2023 after three adjournments.

When the matter came up today (Tuesday, December 12), the presiding judge said she could not entertain the argument on the bail application.

She noted that the State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) still had time to file its response on the application since it was served only on December 5.

Justice Orji, thereafter, adjourned the bail hearing to January 23, 2024.

KOKO TV NG reported on December 6, that the family members of the duo revealed that the Awgu Magistrate Court remanded them on trumped-up charges on October 31, 2023, and had not transmitted their case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), because according to the registrar, the complainant (police) had not paid for the transfer of the case file.

“Their bail application had stalled for three occasions now because of the absence of the judge. We have gone to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice but to our greatest surprise, the Magistrate Court that remanded them has not submitted the case file to the DPP.

“For us, we don’t know whether the court registrar conspired with the police to stop the transmission of the case file to punish their victims.

“When we reached out to the registrar, he demanded money to send the file to the DPP which we have paid. As it is now, I don’t know whether the case file has been transmitted to the DPP,” a family source said.

KOKO TV NG reported on November 15 that policemen reportedly working with the Divisional Police Officer, Awgu Police Division, CSP Benjamin Ugwui, brutalised and broke the hand of Ikechukwu Uduji, before he was arraigned with his boss, Ikechukwu Okolie, on a trumped-up charge of attempted murder.

KOKO TV NG reported on November 13, that the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, ordered the arrest and arraignment of Uduji, 23 and Okolie, 38 over their petition against the DPO of Awgu Police Division.

They were arrested and detained at the Awgu Police Station after they were reportedly tortured and brutalised for two days. On October 31, they were arraigned before Magistrate P. U. Igwilo of the Awgu Magisterial District Holden at Mgbidi on charges of attempted murder and serious assault on four policemen who reportedly brutalised him.
