Elvert Ayanbem Elected Cross River Assembly Speaker

Elvert Ayanbem has been elected as the new Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly.

Cross River Assembly passes 61 resolutions, 7 bills, 17 reports - Daily Post NigeriaHe was the only nominee as the closest contender, Hilary Bisong from Boki 2 state constituency, who was adjudged the favourite, is thought to have stepped down.

Ayanbem represents the Ikom 2 state constituency in the central part of the state.

Sylvester Agabi, representing Bekwara state constituency, was also elected deputy Speaker.

The Clerk of the Assembly, Aka Bisong, administered the oath of office to them.

The event was held inside the assembly hall on Tuesday and was witnessed by tumultuous crowds.

The newly inaugurated lawmakers, most of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, showed understanding with the party’s zoning formula, which allows the spread of offices over all the constituencies.

Governor Bassey Otu hails from the southern senatorial district, while his deputy governor hails from the northern district and the Speaker is from the Central.

The performance of the 10th assembly would be judged by how they will handle the list of nominees for commissioners, which Otu will send to them for screening next week.
