The Independent National Electoral Commission has suspended the process of recalling Dino Melaye from the Nigerian Senate. The decision was announced by the commission’s national commissioner in a statement on Thursday. The decision is based on a ruling of a Federal High Court, which asked all parties to maintain ‘status quo’ in the proceedings.
Melaye who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, alongside Kogi APC chapter had begged the court to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commissions INEC, from going through with the recall process. The commission however said INEC will appeal the ruling.
Melaye is facing a battle to keep his seat at the Nigerian Senate after 52 per cent of his constituents voted to recall him. INEC needs only at least 50 per cent of the registered voters to begin a recall process.
