Fact Check: Does Egypt Have 3 Million Policemen Has Claimed By Dino Melaye?

The Presidential Spokesperson for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Dino Melaye, in a recent interview, stated that the Egyptian police have close to 3 million policemen, securing the country of about 102 million.

The former lawmaker from Kogi while making a comparison between the Nigerian Police Force and their Egyptian counterpart stated that it is appalling that Nigeria has a Police Force of about 300,000, securing a nation of about 200 million, while the Police Force in Egypt is about 3 million, securing a population that is not up to our own.

Verification

According to the data available to the public, the Egyptian entire Police Force is 104,923,000.

Verdict

The statement by the PDP spokesperson is wrong, the entire Egyptian Police Force is not 3 million, but 1.4 million.

In the same breath, Senator Dino Melaye, also claimed that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar discovered the former EFCC Chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

Verification

During the early days of the EFCC in 2003, when the EFCC had no Budget to stand on, the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar took money from the Privitalization committee and borrowed the EFCC.

The anti-graft commission started its operations with the money Atiku Abubakar lobbied for them.

The former Vice-President was also very instrumental in the appointment of Nuhu Ribadu, as the first Chairman of EFCC.

Verdict

Dino Melaye was right, Atiku Abubakar helped Ribadu in establishing the EFCC, and was pivotal in his appointment as the first chairman.
