A civic group, Christian Youths in Politics and Governance, has called on governments at all levels to ensure that the palliatives meant to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal by the President Bola Tinubu-led federal government were equitably distributed to Nigerians irrespective of religion or political divide.

The group in a statement issued on Tuesday which was jointly signed by its principal officers – Emmanuel Ejeh Owoicho, Ogunbawo Sunday Olukoya, Azuh Unegbu, and Iheanacho Dozie, said that the welfare of Nigerians transcends political, religious, and ethnic boundaries.
The group appealed to the state governments to ensure a fair distribution that encompasses all citizens.
“The Nigerian government’s efforts to provide palliative measures, including trailer loads of rice and substantial funds, have been met with concerns about their effective distribution. Christian Youths in Politics and Governance firmly believe that the welfare of Nigerians transcends political, religious, and ethnic boundaries, and are urging state governments to ensure a fair distribution that encompasses all citizens.”

The group urged the state governments to show accountability by openly acknowledging the receipt of relief materials and funds from the federal government. Adding that transparency in reporting these resources is essential for fostering public trust and confidence.
The statement partly read: “We emphasise the necessity of involving a diverse array of stakeholders in the distribution process. This includes representatives from religious, traditional, and community groups. Such inclusivity guarantees that every sector of society is represented, promoting a more holistic approach to distribution.

“Our organization firmly believes that relief materials should reach every stratum of society, irrespective of political affiliations, religious beliefs, regional backgrounds, or tribal roots. Ensuring equal access to these resources is fundamental to combating poverty and hunger.
“We stress the importance of adhering strictly to the established distribution models, thereby averting any deviations that could compromise the fairness of the process.”

The Christian group recalls the events of the 2020, Covid-19 pandemic which inadequate distribution of palliatives led to unfortunate incidents of warehouse looting, and urged for a thorough and well-planned distribution process to prevent history from repeating itself.
“We remind state governments that their actions are being observed not only by the Nigerian populace but also by the international community. It is our collective responsibility to prioritize the well-being of all citizens.
“As we navigate the challenges that lie ahead, we firmly believe that our collective efforts will pave the way for a more united and resilient Nigeria. By ensuring that relief materials reach those in need, we uphold the values of empathy, equity, and responsibility in governance,” the statement read.
