Lionel Messi has paid tribute to Diego Maradona following the Argentine’s death on Wednesday.
Maradona has passed away at the age of 60 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Buenos Aires.
Both Messi and Maradona are widely regarded as two of the best players of all time, and the Argentine duo are often compared to each other due to their similar playing styles.
Maradona also managed Messi with Argentina’s national team at the World Cup in 2010 but the team were unable to lift the trophy as they were knocked out by Germany in the quarter-finals.

‘A very sad day for all Argentines and for football,’ Messi wrote on Instagram following the news of Maradona’s death.
‘He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal. I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I wanted to take the opportunity to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.’
Speaking in 2010, Messi hailed Maradona as the greatest of all time. ‘Even if I played for a million years, I’d never come close to Maradona,’ said the Barcelona legend. Not that I’d want to anyway. He’s the greatest there’s ever been.’
In an interview with France Football last month, Maradona hailed Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the world’s two best players by a considerable distance.
When asked to name the current players who make him dream, Maradona replied: ‘Messi and Cristiano, Cristiano and Messi. For me, those two are a notch above the others. I don’t see anyone coming close to them. Not a single one has done even half of what they have.’Photo Credit: Getty
