The Everton midfielder was substituted before half-time against Turkish third-division side Sanliurfaspor in the Turkish Cup on Wednesday.

And in his first post on social media since then, former Tottenham and England star Alli insisted his love for football is why he won’t give up.

Alli joined Besiktas on a season-long loan from Evertn in August after failing to resurrect his form at Goodison Park, marking a nightmare from grace for a player who once lit up the Premer league at 21.

Back in 2017 he finished the season with 18 goals in 37 appearances for Spurs and looked destined for a long and successful career at the top, yet five-and-a-half years on the midfielder is being jeered by his own supporters in Turkey.

After starting the Turkish Cup fifth-round fixture, Alli endured a difficult opening 29 minutes before being hooked by manager Senol Gunes while they trailed 2-0.

As he left the field at Vodafone Park, the home crowd could be heard booing him after growing frustrated with his poor form for the club.

He was not the only change Gunes made at that stage of the game, though Canadian veteran Atiba Hutchinson was not subjected to the same reception as he jogged off first.

To make matters worse for Alli, Besiktas completed a remarkable turnaround after he was replaced by Gedson Fernandes, with the hosts fighting back to eventually claim a 4-2 victory.
