On This Day: The Republic Of Nigeria Held Her Most Popular Election

Location: The streets of Nigeria
Event: Presidential elections were held in Nigeria on 12 June 1993, the first since the 1983 military coup. The result was a victory for Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola of the Social Democratic Party, who defeated Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention. However, the elections were later annulled by military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, leading to a crisis that ended with Sani Abacha heading a coup later in the year. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Fun Fact: As a philanthropist, he donated in 1991, N120 million to all higher institutions in the country among other organisations. And as a chief, he bagged more traditional titles than any other Nigerian.Photo Credit: Getty
