On This Day: Nigerian Activist Anthony Enahoro Is Finally Deported By British Government

Location: United Kingdom to Nigeria
Event: Nigeria’s foremost anti-colonial and pro-democracy activist Anthony Enahoro who fled to United Kingdom being accused by the Nigerian federal government of treason for an alleged coup attempt. He fled to London via Accra with the government requesting the British government to deny Anthony’s request for asylum and extradite him. After much parliamentary and media debate, Anthony was finally extradited to Nigeria on this day in 1963. He was consequently tried and sentenced to 15 years in prison but was pardoned three years later.Fun Fact: In 1953, Anthony Enahoro initiated the self-government motion in the Western House of Assembly, which eventually led to Nigerian Independence on the 1st day of October, 1960.Photo Credit: Getty
