On This Day: 21st King For The 21st Century – Rilwan Akiolu Is Confirmed By Lagos Kingmakers

Event: After the death of Oba Oyekan, Rilwan Akiolu who was a prince from one of the royal families of Lagos, formally put in an application for the throne of Lagos along with other contenders. At the time, he was a recently retired Assistant Inspector General of Police and was jostling for a position which was also been strongly contended for by other qualified candidates. But on May 23 2003, the Tinubu-led Lagos State government in conjunction with the kingmakers in Lagos officially selected Rilwan out of all the other contestants as the nest Oba of Lagos. He was promptly capped the next day, with official coronation happening three months later on August 9.Fun Fact: Lagos State is the most populous state in Nigeria but it has the highest number of people.
