Court Orders The Immediate Release Of Deposed Emir Of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II

Justice Anwuili Chikere of the Federal High Court seated in Abuja has on Friday, March 13, 2020 order the immediate release of the dethroned Emir Of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II from confinement/detention from the 2-bedroom apartment in Awe community in Nasarawa State. Muhammad Sanusi II

Recall that after deposed Emir Of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II was dethroned on Monday he was banished to a town in Nasarawa State, Loko town before he was moved again to new confinement in Awe Nasarawa State, Sanusi filed a suit before the court challenging his confinement to a 2 Bedroom apartment with security details keeping watch of his every move.

Delivering judgement this morning, the court directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Attorney General of Kano State and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) – who are all named as respondents in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed on March 12th by Sanusi, to immediately ensure his release from the confinement.

“An interim order of this honourable court releasing the applicant from the detention and or confinement of the respondents and restoring the applicant’s rights to human dignity, personal liberty, freedom of association and movement in Nigeria, (apart from Kano State) pending the hearing and determination of the applicant’s originating summons.” the judge said

The judge also ordered that the order for the release of the deposed monarch should be served on the respondents to the application. The case was adjourned to March 26 for further hearing. SanusiPhoto Credit: Getty
