Court Orders Nigerian Police To Pay N10m Compensation For Unlawful Killing

The Federal High Court in Ibadan has ordered the Nigerian Police Force to pay N10 million as compensation to the family of Mr. Alidu Hakeem, a commercial driver, who was shot dead by a policeman in Oyo State.
Mr. Hakeem was shot dead by a police officer, Ifeanyi Onynbu on the 9th of March 2016 along the Saki-Okere International Market road.
Mr. Hakeem was shot in the head by officer Ifeanyi for refusing to give him an additional N100 bribe after he had collected the usual N100 bribe paid by all commercial drivers at the police check point. Mr. Hakeem’s son, Afeez, filed a lawsuit on enforcement of fundamental human rights against the Nigerian police. The suit demanded N500 million as compensation for the unlawful killing of his father.
