Italy suffered a setback in its fight against coronavirus after the death toll increased following a few days of decline.

Some 743 people have died in the last 24 hours, taking the total number to 6,820. Death rates had been dropping this week from 793 on Saturday to 651 on Sunday and just over 600 on Monday.

The number of fatalities now stands at close to double the amount that China has suffered since Covid-19 first emerged last December. Italy has now been in lockdown for three weeks but the number of confirmed cases has risen to more than 69,000.

Experts collecting data said the true number of people who have been infected could be ten times that amount because of a lack of necessary tests.
The harshest of the lockdown measures are due to expire tomorrow but the government is likely to extend them in some way. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte today hiked fines for people defying the orders to stay at home.

Anyone caught leaving their home without good reason will now face fines of between 400 euros to 3,000 euros (£361 to £2,719) against a previous 206 euros (£186). There is speculation the lockdown could last until the end of July, although Mr Conte denied that.
