Chelsea Troll Brighton As Club Announces £62 million Marc Cucurella Signing

Chelsea have taken a swipe at Brighton in confirming the signing of Marc Cucurella for a fee that could reach £62 million.

The Spaniard has agreed a six-year deal, with Chelsea confident they have registered the 24-year-old in time to make his debut at Everton on Saturday.

But Chelsea have also taken aim at Brighton in the Tweet announcing Cucurella’s arrival. On Wednesday Brighton issued a Club Statement saying that: “Contrary to inaccurate reports from numerous media outlets this evening, no agreement has been reached with any club to sell Marc Cucurella.”

That was despite negotiations being well advanced, with Chelsea responding in kind as they announced the deal was done, issuing a statement of their own:

The deal agreed for the full-back is worth £55m plus £7m in add-ons as Cucurella becomes the third major signing for Chelsea this summer, after Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Chelsea are in the market for more additions to Thomas Tuchel’s squad, with Barcelona duo Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Frankie de Jong also targets.

Tuchel said:

“I’m really happy, it’s a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I’m going to work hard to be happy here and help the team,” said Cucurella.

Chelsea chairman and co-controlling owner Todd Boehly hailed another signing boasting Premier League experience, one of the club’s main aims this summer.

“Marc is an elite defender of proven Premier League quality and he further strengthens our squad going into the new season,” said Boehly.

“We continue to work on and off the pitch, and we’re delighted Marc will be a part of the present and future at Chelsea.”

Levi Colwill has also made his season-long loan switch to Brighton in a deal separate from Cucurella’s Chelsea transfer, but that had to be completed for both transfers to be sealed.
