Chelsea have raced ahead of Manchester City to stand in a great position to sign long-term defensive target Marc Cucurella.
The former Barcelona man is the second name to join the defence this summer, following the loss of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen as free agents. The new addition will join Kalidou Koulibaly in the backline, able to play as a full-back, wing-back and centre-back on the left.

Marc Cucurella joined Brighton for £15m last summer and was named as the club’s player of the season after impressing in his debut campaign.
The 24-year-old had been in advanced talks with the Premier League champions this summer and a deal was expected to be agreed with Brighton, however, Pep Guardiola’s side backed out of the transfer unwilling to meet the £50m price tag.
