Chelsea Miss Out On Dayot Upamecano As Bayern Munich Confirm £42.5m Transfer

Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano on a five-year deal.

The Frenchman has been the subject of strong interest from Premier League clubs, with Manchester United and Chelsea both keen on signing the centre-back.

A clause in the 22-year-old’s contract means he’s available for a relatively affordable £42.5m this summer and the race had been heating up to convince Upamecano of his next move.

However, Chelsea and Manchester United will have to look elsewhere as Bundesliga champions Bayern confirmed this morning that they have agreed a deal to sign the defender in July.

‘We’re happy that we’ve been able to sign Dayot Upamecano for Bayern Munich,’ said Hasan Salhamidzic.

‘We’re convinced that Dayot will be a very important member of our team in the coming years.’

It’s reported that the defender has signed a five-year deal with the German giants and he will join before the 2021-22 season.

Chelsea are set to trigger a 12-month extension clause in Thiago Silva’s contract, which would see the Brazilian spend another year at Stamford Bridge.

The veteran has impressed since joining on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer and he’s keen to stay in London.

United want a long-term partner for Harry Maguire and will consider Upamecano’s centre-back partner Ibrahima Konate as an alternative.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expects to spend a large chunk of his summer budget on a defender, though the club remain keen on signing Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.
