Champions League: Basel Shocks Football World with 5-nil Victory Over Benfica

History was made on Wednesday night when Basel cruised to a 5-0 victory in a match where they were never expected to gain more than one point. Both teams came into the match after recording a defeat in their first match and the entire football world expected Benfica to bounce back from the September 12 home loss to CSKA Moscow.
Basel scored the first goal shortly after kick-off when Micheal Lang struck from close range leaving Benfica’s defense stunned.
Oberlin made it two in the 21st minute when Renato Steffen launched a counter-attack from his own half to find Oberlin who humbled Julio Ceaser with a perfect finish.
Benfica’s world came crumbling down when Eduardo Salvio made a very clumsy tackle in the box and the Ref wasted no time in awarding a penalty. Ricky van Wolfswinkel made Benfica sorry by slotting the ball into the net.
Benfica players lost composure and Andre Almeida was sent off in the 62nd minute for an irrational two-footed attack on Luca Zuffi.
Oberlin got his brace in the 69th minute and Blas Riveros made it five-seven minutes later. Basel is trailing Manchester United in the second position while Benfica is at the bottom of the group with no point in two matches.Photo Credit: Getty
