President Muhammadu Buhari, alongside his Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has decorated the new Chief Of Army Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya with the rank of Lieutenant General, following his appointment as the COAS.
The President had appointed Farouk Yahaya to head the Nigerian Army on the 27th of May, 2021, replacing Ibrahim Attahiru, who had passed on to great beyond, alongside 10 other officers in a tragic plan crash in Kaduna barely six days earlier.
Farouk Yahaya was decorated today, Wednesday 7th July, in a brief ceremony which took place at the State House, Abuja, before the commencement of the weekly virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC), as witnessed by the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali, and other key government officials.
Announcing the decoration in a Facebook post, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, shared pictures of the event with the caption, “President Buhari Decorates New Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya and presides over Federal Executive Council Meeting in State House on 7th July 2021”.
The Lieutenant General rank, which is mostly preserved for whoever assumes the office of the Chief of Army Staff, is said to be the next after the rank of a Major General, which Farouk had before his appointment and assumption into office. Until his appointment, the COAS was the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in the North-east region of the country.
Meanwhile, Farouk Yahaya’s decoration is coming a week after the House of Representatives confirmed his appointment as COAS. TRENDING VIDEO OF THE DAY: Gov Wike Gives One Of His Commissioner’s An Open Cheque For Being Transparent Photos Credit: Facebook. Femi Adesina
