Border Closure Made No Impact On Banditry And Insurgency But Unleashed Hardships And Sufferings – Shehu Sani

Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has expressed that the land border closure by the federal government failed to contain insecurity in the country.

This statement is following President Muhammadu Buhari’s remark on Tuesday that the land borders of the country were closed to control the smuggling of weapons and drugs.

Recall that Nigeria’s land borders have been closed for over a year by the federal government.

Senator Shehu while reacting to President Buhari’s statement expressed that the closure of Nigeria’s borders only unleashed hardships and sufferings on the border communities. He wrote:

“The Closure of Our Country’s borders made no impact in containing banditry and insurgency. It only unleashed hardships and sufferings on the border communities. It was all about Rice and Rice, and we are still neither a major Rice producer nor exporter.”
