Torres joined City from Valencia 18 months ago and played only a bit-part role in last season’s title success, although his form improved towards the end of the campaign which ended with him scoring 21 goals in in 54 appearances.
The 21-year-old began the current campaign by scoring twice in a 5-0 thrashing of Arsenal but has hardly featured since due to a foot injury which has ruled him out for three months.
Barcelona are still reeling somewhat from the summer departure of Lionel Messi and parted company with former manager Ronald Koeman last month, appointing club legend Xavi as his successor.

The need for striking reinforcements was exacerbated by confirmation of Sergio Aguero’s retirement last week with the Argentine forced to concentrate on preserving his health following a heart scare.
Torres is said to be enthused by the prospect of working closely with Xavi who views the versatile forward as a key component of his rebuilding project.
Barcelona are currently in the midst of a financial crisis but are willing to let a number of fringe players depart next month in a bid to fund a move for Torres, including the likes of Sergino Dest.
