Avicii has been reported to have committed suicide, days after his family claimed the DJ “really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, and Happiness.”

Sources reportedly told TMZ that Avicii, whose real name was Tim Bergling, committed suicide by cutting himself with a shard of glass from a broken wine bottle.

“Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions. An over-achieving perfectionist who traveled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress,” read the family statement released on Thursday. “When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most — music.”

Avicii was found dead in Muscat, Oman on Friday afternoon, aged 28. His death comes just days after he was nominated for a Billboard Music Award for top dance/electronic album for his EP Avicii (01). Some sources claimed the fatal wound was inflicted on Avicii’s neck, another said it was the DJ’s wrist, but neither story has been confirmed.

Avicii was best known for his singles “Hey Brother,” and “Wake Me Up,” which has generated over one billion YouTube views.
