Gunners chiefs are keen to replace Laurent Koscielny and have turned their attention to the experienced Brazilian, 32. Luiz will reportedly have a medical today before completing a deadline-day switch.

Luiz only signed a new two-year contract at Stamford Bridge in May but Frank Lampard is prepared to cut him loose and let the player go. The Blues will save millions in wages, which will be used when their transfer embargo ends. Arsenal, meanwhile, will have had a superb window if they complete the swoop with Unai Emery reshaping his squad.

Record-signing Nicolas Pepe, Real Madrid loanee Dani Ceballos and Brazil starlet Gabriel Martinelli will add creativity up top. While the additions of Luiz and Tierney should improve the Gunners’ leaky back line, which was their Achilles heel last season. Before landing on Luiz, Arsenal looked at Daniele Rugani, Samuel Umtiti and Dayot Upamecano.

While Danny Welbeck, Krystian Bielik, David Ospina, Carl Jenkinson and Takuma Asano have been moved on after Aaron Ramsey left on a free – in a major reshuffle. Emery has also landed defensive prospect William Saliba, who has returned to St Etienne on loan for the season.
