Union takes over access gate, dislodge concessioners, FAAN reacts
Members of the various aviation unions have reportedly taken over the Muritala Mohammed Airport Lagos toll gate from its former managing company I-Cube West Africa Limited and dislodged users who have the rights to the premises.
Reports have it that there was chaos at the access gate yesterday as members of the Air Transport Senior Staff Association of Nigeria ATSSAN, National Union of Ait Reansport Employees NUATE, Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals ANAP and National Union of Pensioners NUP blocked the gate and prevented the management of the gate by the concessioner.
Speaking at the location, ANAPÂ General Secretary, Mr Abdulrasaq Saidu disclosed that some politicians had messed up the system through illegal concession of revenue points at the airports and it is now important for the Federal Aiport Authority to take over. He stated further that the concession of the access gate was fraudulent without a review of the contract for more than five years and that the traffic on the route had greatly increased since the last exercise was carried out.
I-Cube West Africa Limited Manager, Mr. Toluwaleke Abajingin, expressed his shock at the actions of the workers and unions, saying that the case was in court between one Rosepine Integrated Limited, FAAN and I-Cube. He added that I-Cube had been up to date in its payment to the Federal Aiport Authority and was never informed about any upward review of the contract or otherwise. Reacting to the crisis, FAAN issued a press statement in which it disclosed that the Unions’ take over ensued as the contract between I-Cube West Africa Limited and FAAN authorising the former to manage the access gate on behalf of the latter had expired. Henrietta Yakubu, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs who signed the statement promised that FAAN will address the matter and proffer a lasting solution.
