AAU Dismisses 2 Lecturers For Extortion, Sexual Harassment Amongst Others

The management of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Edo state has dismissed 13 academic and non-academic staff for alleged sexual harassment, extortion, age falsification, and gross misconduct.

Asomwan Adagbonyin, the varsity’s vice-chancellor, said their dismissal followed recommendations of the institution’s staff disciplinary committee.

He said the committee found the affected staff guilty of the offences after its findings.

The VC said those affected were from the faculty of basic medical science, medical laboratory sciences, nursing department, engineering department, faculty of law, and political science.

He disclosed that the committee, in its report, recommended that “the criminal aspect of the disengage staff members’ offences should be reported to security operatives”.

Adagbonyin said among those dismissed included a lecturer who was found guilty of extorting students of N32,000 and N52,000.

He added that another lecturer was fired after being indicted of sexual harassment.

“The lecturer had claimed to only make advances, but he went to the girl’s church to plead for forgiveness. The victim has been protected and reassigned to another lecturer,” he said.

“Out of the 209 disciplinary cases received, the USDC has concluded 132 of the cases, while 77 cases are pending.” lecturer
