American rapper Kanye West is currently fighting a legal battle with his record label, EMI over the contract he signed with them. The contract states that he is not allowed to retire as a songwriter, recording artist, producer or even take an extended break. This deal was signed in 2003 by the 41-year-old rapper who is currently trying to wriggle his way out of it. He said that the deal is lopsided and claimed he had been underpaid by the label. This he said violated the California law which frowns at keeping anyone locked into a personal service contract for more than seven years. He is currently working towards persuading a judge to declare him the winner of the works he created after October 2010. The artist had released four albums since that time which includes My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, in November 2010; Yeezus, in June 2013; The Life Of Pablo, in February 2016; and Ye, in June 2018. Reacting to this, EMI is attempting to take the state from the state court to the Federal court which has jurisdiction over copyright law. Kanye’s contract states that he must: “remain actively involved in writing, recording and producing” songs and albums…At no time during the term will you seek to retire as a songwriter, recording artist or producer or take any extended hiatus during which you are not actively pursuing your musical career in the same basic manner as you have pursued such career to date.”Photo Credit: Getty
