The leader of the Shiite group in Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, has been charged with murder after several violent protest were held the Federal Capital Territory for his release.
El-Zakzaky and his wife have been held by the Federal government since December 2015 despite several court rulings demanded his release.
The Nigerian government claimed that he is being held in protective custody. The Kaduna state government levied a fresh eight-count charge on the religious leader on Thursday.
According to Premium Times, the charges include murder which is punishable by death. The alleged murder took place during the December 2015 clash between El-zakzaky’s group and a convoy of Nigeria’s army chief, Tukur Buratai.
