Donald Trump has just cast his vote in the US midterm election in Palm Beach, Florida, predicting a “great night” for Republicans.

“You have to fight crime, you have to keep our taxes low and you have to do something about immigration,” he told reporters outside a polling station.

“I think we’re going to have a very great night and it’s exciting,” Trump added. He confirmed that he had voted for Ron DeSantis, the Republican governor of Florida and a potential rival for the presidential nomination in 2024. At a recent campaign rally, Trump dismissed him as “Ron DeSanctimonious”.

Today’s voting will be seen as a verdict on the Biden presidency close to its halfway stage.

Voters will decide the fate of all 435 two-year seats in the House of Representatives, 36 of the 100 six-year seats in the Senate and 36 of the 50 state governors. Other roles are elected at state level, including 6,278 seats in 88 of the country’s 99 state legislative chambers across 46 states.

Although Biden and Trump are not on the ballot, the states that flipped from Republican to Democrat to give Biden the White House are of particular interest. The outcomes will be scrutinised not just for the impact within each state but for what they say about the two men’s prospects of winning a second term in 2024.
