5 Nigerian Celebrities That Showed Support For Chiwetalu Agu

Veteran Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, made the headlines across the country last week after he was arrested by men of the Nigerian military around Upper Iweka Bridge in Onitsha Anambra State. But the actor who was seen in a viral video speaking with the military said he was on a charity mission, giving out bread to the underprivileged when some military men invaded an area where he was doing his humanitarian project and carted him away for doing absolutely nothing incite violence.

Though the veteran iconic actor was released on Friday, October 8th, 2021 after spending a day in the custody of the Nigerian army, there was a major outrage on social media after a video emerged online that went viral where the veteran actor was seen been brutalized, carried in a wheelbarrow and later carried like a sack of rice by some men of the Nigerian military. 

This act led to different reactions from a number of other Nollywood actors and colleagues of Chiwetalu Agu. With a number of them calling for the immediate release of the actor, while others slammed the military for treating Nigerian movie industry icons in such a manner so unbefitting of him. Most showed support to him castigating the Nigerian government, below are some of the Nigerian celebrities that who showed support to Chiwetalu Agu;

  1. Ernest Obi: Ace Nollywood actor, director, and producer, Ernest Obi was one of the very first actors to speak up in support of a colleague referring to him as High Chief Chiwetalu Agu, has a right to stand up for what he believes in shouldn’t be subject to the type of brutality Chief Chiwetalu was been subject to just for wearing a particular dress. He then ended his statement by saying “I Stand With High Chief Chiwetalu Agu”.
  2. Chizzy Alichi: Another famous Nollywood personality that spoke out about the arrest and treatment of the veteran actor was the beautiful melanin-popping actress Chizzy Alichi. She was one of the first to take to her social media page to kick against the arrest and was also one of the first to take to her page to announce his release before he was then re-arrest and flown out of Anambra state back to the DSS headquarters in Abuja and denied access to family members.   3. Queen Hilbert: another actress that used her platform to support Chiwetalu Agu was the light-skinned Igbo damsel from Enugu State, Queen Hilbert writing that she stands with Uncle Chiwetalu, for he has done no wrong. She was also one of those that took it upon themselves to announce his release online.
  4. Shan George: The Veteran actress from Cross-River, in her reaction to the arrest and harassment of the actor, called on Chiwetalu Agu to own up to his struggle with his full chest because he has a right to make a stand for what he believes and even protest for it so far he wasn’t carrying any arm nor causing any type of violence and rather not claim the regalia he was wearing was a civil cloth and not that of the IPOB or that carrying the insignia of the Biafra People. She even went as far as giving an example of Scotland protesting for self-determination in a break away from the UK. Shan George

Eedris Abdulkareem: Veteran Hip-Hop artiste, rapper, and political activist, Eedris Abdulkareem also spoke up in support of Chiwetalu Agu, noting that very soon it will become a crime just to even speak the Igbo Language with the way the current political administration is handling issues in the South-East.
