The year is running out so fast and its no wrong to say the fashion trends of the year have been clearly established. From the runway to the red carpet, inspired fashionistas in Nigeria have been rocking each season’s hottest trends with great enthusiasm. So get ready as we unveil to you five of the most conspicuous fashion trends making waves this year.
Velvet Reincarnation

Well known with the Aso Ebi scene a couple years back, this 80’s texture which is one of the main trends this year has found its way back to the scene and we sure have seen a whole lot of it in different designs and colours. Velvet is hardly a new trend, but this year, designers are already giving the rich fabric a nice little update (mostly via color) on the New York runways and also the collections of a some Nigerian designers for the Lagos fashion & design week.
The 70’s Bell Bottom Pants
Don’t call it a throwback! The latest disco era trend to make its way back into the fashion spotlight is none other than the bell bottom. It made its welcome departure from the ever-popular skinny jean from the early 2000s and the mid- 70s last year and continued into this year which has been endlessly spotted on almost everywhere, from street styles to runways to red carpets in Nigeria.
Romantic Ruffles

Ruffles are no longer old school or “church”, they are now presented as chic and sexy. Fashionistas have been spotted wearing soft and loose ruffles, cascading in tiers and falling in gathers. Whether in suede, silk, or raffia, let the fabric dictate the shape of this ultra-feminine detail. Aside from the fact that this trend ensures the wearer looks as though they belong in a modern day fairytale, it has a way of making any piece look positively feminine and utterly delicate; particularly when created from flimsy, swaying fabrics. The trend is definitely a must-have for anyone with a predilection for luxury and drama.

If you have been wondering why the sleeves on celebrities and fashionistas have been seemingly getting longer and bigger, relax, it’s not just you. It appears designers have taken a stronghold of the voluminous and bell-sleeve silhouette and fashionistas are going with it. A trend with an Old English spin, they are fun, dramatic and perfect for making a fashion statement. Though there are slight variations in structure and style, they are infinitely romantic.

Cold/Off Shoulder
You didn’t think the cold shoulder was going anywhere, did you? The 2017 fashion trends wouldn’t be complete if it doesn’t have an answer to this off-the shoulder phenomenon: the one-shoulder top or dress. Asymmetry is on trend, and there is nothing sexier than showing one shoulder which is been rocked by almost every modern-day woman.
