Locals in Nganzai local government area of Borno State, northeast Nigeria, on Sunday said over 40 persons were killed in the aftermath of the attack by Boko Haram on Saturday.

Nganzai, a local government in northern Borno and few kilometres to Maiduguri, the capital, came under attack earlier before the insurgents moved to Monguno where they were repelled by the Nigerian military.

The story, however, was different in Nganzai as locals said there was no help for them when the insurgents attacked their town.

According to the residents, local vigilante and hunters were left to engage the insurgents, who came with more superior fire power and overwhelmed the fighting men, leaving trails of blood.

Bukar Gonimi, a resident of Nganzai, who narrowly escaped said that there were no security operatives in the town when the militants attacked.

“Fighting aircraft came but left and did not return when the fighting was ongoing and did not also fire at the insurgents, a situation which made some of the local vigilante to retreat,” he said.
He lamented that none of their representatives, either at the State Assembly or the National Assembly made a call to the people to ask about their well being since the attack.Photo Credit: Getty
