Music Review: 2Baba’s Warrior Is A Weak Statement From A Music Legend

When we hear the name Innocent Idibia or 2Face, even if you say 2Baba, we sit upright. We get our acts together and prepare our ears to be fed with tingling melody, our bodies to dance to vibrating remedy and our minds to drink lustily from the creative genius that the man and his songs have become known for.

2Baba2Baba is no stranger to the music industry, with over 20 years in the game, the African Queen singer has doubtless earned his veteran status and his place among the big names in the Nigerian music league.
The man has come a long way and has a retinue of stories to tell. From his days with Plantashun Boiz, to his days of being unable to keep his snake in his pants, to the days of controversies over song buying and times of classical tracks, he has proved his mettle as a singer, songwriter and performer (an artiste with a difference).
And that is what makes his recent project worrisome and disappointing. Perhaps, one thing artistes must realize that a great album is not necessarily one that is star studded and that in itself is the first big fail of this album.
Housing all the big names on the album from Wizkid to Olamide, including Tiwa Savage and Burna Boy, the album falls below standard and expectation.

2Face has become known for quality and some might argue that he almost never drops a wrong song but with this Warriors album, we are shaking our head at the misery that the tracks fill our ears with. The project fills like a rushed and desperate attempt. It lacks quality and the meticulousness that the music veteran has become known for.
While most of the songs do not bang, a few will leave you singing and dancing along to them for days and one of them is the Opo track with Wizkid. A true jam and one that will make it big in the music space.
Another beautiful track on the album is the one with the African giant, Burna Boy, We Must Groove. The song is already making it big on the airwaves and will definitely enjoy massive airplay. It has that genuine afrobeat tune and the trumpets playing are a seductive and aesthetic relief.
Another great track is Oyi which was released in 2018 and still has the same beauty as it had then. And that’s how a good song should be, remain beautiful and melodious no matter the time it spends without airplay.
Target with Syemca is also passionate and lovely but it is the Opo track with Wizkid that bags the best track on the album. A true beauty.
Summarily, experience breeds perfection and that’s what we expect from 2Face. While some might argue that 2Face isn’t for this current music industry, we disagree. Being a veteran means just like Albert Einstein said learning the tricks of the game, then playing to be better than anyone else.
And that’s what our music legend needs to learn. The project seems like 2Baba is trying to find a balance between the old African Queen man and the current Warriors album. We sincerely hope he does so before his legend status becomes blurry and a subject of debate as to whether he truly deserves it.
